Tips From The Blogging Queen
Column 17 - April 2008

*NOTE FROM DEBBIE: I'm happy to have Linda Walsh (certified "The Blogging Queen") offer a column here at Faithful Friends Online! Each month we will feature and archive on the website her columns regarding her blogging experiences. Thank-you so much Linda for your wonderful writings for Work At Home Businesses!

Have You Become Blistless?

Last month in my TFTBQ Column 16 our definition was "Blistless or B-listless." This is what happens when a blogger doesn't care about posting and becomes apathetic about it. In other words - listless. Also known as "blogathy" which is characterized by lack of interest in your blog. Our question was "Have You Become Blisless?"

Every blogger suffers from time to time with being a little bored with their blog and with writing articles. You might not have anything new to say or might get a version of writers block called "bloggers block" That's alright. Usually it will pass and usually it just requires stepping back from you blog for a bit.

The problem for a small business blogger is that by not posting frequently or taking too long of a break might result in lost readership. And, once the readership is lost, it is very hard to reclaim.

Lost readership can also translate into a loss of customers and potential business. For the small business blogger that isn't good.

So, what do you do if you're a small business blogger and a little tired of your blog. Well, you plan for the occasional blistless or blogathy periods and re-issue previous posts, stockpile some articles ahead of time. or post some re-cap articles.

What do I mean by this?

Well, you prepare for the blistless periods - which you are going to have - by writing generic articles that are not time or period sensitive that you can re-post later on. Or, you prepare by stockpiling articles ahead of time that can be posted when you're in a blistless period.

Both of these require a little planning and forethought as to what your articles will be about. When writing re-post articles just give some thought as to being able to re-post this, say in 6 months or next year and write with that in mind.

For the stockpile articles I have always found that when I'm in a "blogging" mode that I can write several articles ahead of time and save them to  be released later on. For the re-cap articles this is where having several different theme oriented blogs comes into play. All you have to do is post articles re-capping what's happening on your other blogs.

All three of the above will keep you posting during the blistless periods and keep your small business from suffering in readership and potential customers. Most importantly, don't worry. Your "blistless" or "blogathy" period will pass and you'll be blogging again to beat the band!

"Tips From the Blogging Queen" Column 17 Definition - "Blogroll"

This is a list of links of your blogs sidebar. They can be a manual list maintained by the blogger or a list provided by a "BlogRolling" service. Be sure to tune in to my TFTBQ Column 18 on "Are Blogrolls Important?"

OUR BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT IS ON
D and M Custom Creations

I'm very pleased to have Mary of D and M Custom Creations as the Business Spotlight this month. Thank-you so much Mary!

Here are the Questions and Answers shared by Mary:

1. Describe your business: type of business, where you're located, how long you have been in business, website URL's, etc.

At DandMcustomcreations.com we specialize in personalized embroidered gift items. I love to get creative & really work with a customer to create the perfect gift for those "hard to buy for" people. I have literally thousands of embroidery designs, so it's fun to help design the perfect fit. I work from home on my days off from my "regular" job as a Critical Care nurse. D&M Custom Creations is brand new; my site has been active since June 2007.

2. How did you decide on your business name?

Well, my husband's name is Danny & I'm Mary so D&M Custom Creations just seemed to fit.

3. What were the first things you did to get your business going?

I thought about what I wanted to do & then contacted my fabulous web page designer & manager - Debbie Goodrich at FaithfulFriendsOnline.com who guided me through those critical first steps. Of course, I had to get a resale business license & file papers with the city, county & state of California. All the paperwork was surprisingly easy. I did it in a day.

4. How long did it take you from the time you decided to open your business to your Grand Opening Day?

Only a couple of months. Things went pretty fast.

5. What was the best thing you did to get your business going?

I was advised by just about everyone to network, network and network. This has proven to be very good advice. I also told everyone I know about my business and handed out business cards and added a banner to my email.

6. What was one thing that you did that you would advise others not to do?

Don't expect to quit your day job over night. It takes time and patience and a lot of networking to get going.

7. How do you network? What do you find works the best?

I've done a lot of link exchanges & joined email groups and internet forums. I think the best way of networking is word of mouth. I try to make sure my customers are really happy by throwing in a little extra something with their order and going the extra mile. I make sure I send orders out quickly & follow up.

8. Do you advertise? If so, what type of advertising works the best for you business?

I've found inexpensive advertising site's which help, but the best advertisement is a happy customer!

9. Do you have any advice to give someone thinking of getting into their own business?

Go for it! Try to focus on something you really enjoy and keep working until your business takes off.

10. What type of products do you find are 'hot' right now?

Anything personalized. People love to see their name on an item that they will use and their kid's names on keepsake items.

Thank-you Mary for sharing your spotlight with us! I wish you much continued success!
