Tips From The Blogging Queen
Column 8 - June 2007

*NOTE FROM DEBBIE: I'm happy to have Linda Walsh (certified "The Blogging Queen") offer a column here at Faithful Friends Online! Each month we will feature and archive on the website her columns regarding her blogging experiences. Thank-you so much Linda for your wonderful writings for Work At Home Businesses!

Should You Add Blogvert and
Blogvertising to Your Blog?

Last month in my TFTBQ Column 7 our blog definitions were "Blogvert" and
"Blogvertising."

"Blogvert" is an ad on a blog. Ads can be pictures, banners, text, video, etc.

"Blogvertising" is advertising of any shape or nature that appears on a blog either in the sidebar(s), masthead, footnote area, or embedded within the articles of the blog. Blogvertising usually contains a clickable link to the subject advertisers website or blog.

So, the question this month is "Should You Add Blogvert and Blogvertising to Your Blog?

There was a time when advertising on blogs was forbidden and a HUGE
"NO-NO." Blogs were considered personal diaries filled with nothing but text or
images. They were not considered as business tools.

But, times change and so did the thinking on blogs and advertising. Paramount in this change was the ability of anyone including a small business owner to set-up a blog to support their small business. Blogs became mainstream and advertising your own business on your business blog was a no-brainer.

At first small business ads took the form of button ads in the
sidebars or banner ads at the very top of the blogs. Sometimes the ads were
embedded within the articles themselves in the form of text links, etc.
Sometimes they were text links contained within the article bye
lines.

However, with the ease to which blog templates could be altered and
images added blogverts became larger and larger and placed anywhere within the confines of the blog.

With the advent of digital images, photo hosting websites, shopping carts, and E-Products small business bloggers realized that they could use their blogs to effectively advertise and sell specific products. And, nothing was more suited to this than "instant download e-products."

So, small business bloggers advertising their own businesses and products on their own blogs became acceptable. Within reason so as not to turn the customers off, but acceptable.

However, there was a change brewing in the blogvert and blogvertising debate and the question became whether or not you should add other advertising to your blog? Paramount in this change was the onset of Google AdSense ads, Amazon ads, affiliate advertising and the ability of bloggers to earn a few dollars on their blogging efforts.

So, should you add other advertising to your blog?

I think the answer to this depends on what your blog is being used for. If it is a blog that is being used to support and promote your small business and/or website then you need to consider three things before you add other advertising to it:

1) The reason why you set-up your blog up in the first place.
2) Who your customer base is and what advertising would do to your readership?
3) Where you are going to place this advertising.

If you think you can add other advertising without undermining the reasons for your blog and turning off your blog readers and customers then you should consider adding it.

If you think that other advertising will detract from the purpose of your
blog then do not add it. Also, if you think that advertising for others on your
own blog undermines your own small business then do not add it.

Of course there are those true bloggers who still consider advertising in blogs as offensive. I can understand their rationale. However, as blogs become more and more mainstream for big business and small business alike they become a
commonplace advertising vehicle. The answer lies in striking a fine balance
between blogvertising for your blog and turning off your blog readers.

"Tips From The Blogging Queen" Column 8 Definition - "Blogstipation" - Being unable to think of anything to blog about (i.e. writer's block for bloggers).

North Country Esscentuals

I'm very pleased to have North Country Esscentuals as the Business Spotlight this month. Thank-you so much Lauren!

Here are the Questions and Answers shared by Lauren:

1. Describe your business: type of business, where you're located, how long you have been in business, website URL's, etc. North Country Esscentuals is a luxury bath and body and premium candle company. We are located in the bluffs along the Mississippi River in rural Southeastern Minnesota. While our doors have only been open since March of 2007, North Country Esscentuals has been several years in the making. Our web address is www.northcountryesscentuals.com

2. How did you decide on your business name?
I wanted something that appealed to my upper Midwest roots and my Minnesota outdoors lifestyle. North Country is frequently used in many ways here in Minnesota to describer everything from a regional area to several businesses. I believe that spending time pampering yourself with luxury is an essential part of daily living and decided to combine the word essential with scent and thus, North Country Esscentuals was born.

3. What were the first things you did to get your business going? Research!!! Years of research and testing have been the backbone of this business and will continue to be an integral part of the business.

4. How long did it take you from the time you decided to open your business to your Grand Opening Day? Almost 3 years.

5. What was the best thing you did to get your business going?
Honestly? The best thing that happened is having to take three months off this winter when I had surgeries on my shoulder and elbow. I had spent so much time doing product research and development that I hadn't really taken time to develop a concrete business plan and direction. I was originally going to open in November but had to postpone that when I found out I needed to have multiple surgeries in December. During my recovery time, as I was unable to do much but read, I spent those months researching my market, researching marketing, developing a clear path that I wanted to follow with my business and as a result, I can say that I opened up with a clear idea and plan of exactly where I wanted to go with my business.

6. What was one thing that you did that you would advise others not to do?
Rush into opening your business before you have fully research all aspects of the business. You need to have a very clear idea of exactly who you are marketing to and what direction you want your business to go.

7. How do you network? What do you find works the best? This has been a bit of a sticky wicket for me and a good sized learning curve. The majority of my networking is done on a couple of select forums that I remain active in. At first, I joined a lot of different forums - thinking the more the better. BUT, I found that I was spending so much time staying active in my forums that I wasn't spending the time I should have on my business. If you aren't active in a forum, you come across as sounding like a commercial when the only posts you make are about your business. You need to choose just a couple and then be committed to staying active in them. Not only is it a good source for networking, but you also find that you develop some good friendships and a wonderful online support system.

8. Do you advertise? If so, what type of advertising works the best for your business? I do a little bit of advertising. I don't have a large advertising budget so I am pretty selective when it comes to where I spend my money. I have put a links directory on my site and think that link exchanges are a great way to bring traffic to your site. Top sites are another. Of course, I have my banner ad at Faithful Friends Online and I am listed in several online shopping directories.

9. Do you have any advice to give someone thinking of getting into their own business? Make sure that you are passionate about what you choose to go into business doing. When you have an onslaught of orders and are up until the wee hours working on it, you want to be loving what you are doing. Don't open a store where you make and sell widgets if you don't LOVE making widgets. If you aren't passionate about your products it will come across. Spend time researching! Make sure you know your market and then stay on top of the trends in your market! Keep the faith! The competition is unreal for online business. So many open and get discouraged and close within a year. It takes a lot of hard work and a lot of time. Time doesn't have to mean lots of money though. Spend some of  your downtime searching ways to advertise for free. Donate products periodically to different contests, it's a great way to get free advertising as well as get people to sample your products. Believe in yourself above everything else.

10. What type of products do you find are 'hot' right now? This is so hard to define largely because of the huge variety of people's tastes. In my market, I find that people are really into finding 'natural' bath and body products. People are so fickle, and I don't mean to offend, it's just that about the time you think you have it figured out, it changes again! LOL! I mean look at fashion. We went from the bell bottoms in the 70s to the leggings and lace in the 80s. A couple of years ago it was bell bottoms again and now it's the leggings and the lace again. It's a constant evolution and that's why it's so important to read up on your market to see just where the trends are going.

Thank-you Lauren for sharing your spotlight with us! I wish you much continued success!

Punch Needle Revival

By Kelle Arvay
Category:
Punch Needle

Originally called Russian Punch Needle Embroidery, this unique art form has been around since the days of ancient Egyptians and widely used in the 1700's. What we are seeing today is a renewed interest in the art form with the possibilities of designs being endless.

In the last six months or so there has been an increased popularity when it comes to Punch Needle and you will find many more designers offering Punch Needle patterns. Punch Needle is a very easy craft to do even for a beginner. It consist of a punch needle tool, gripper frame, weavers cloth and skiens of cotton or wool floss. Basically you use your threaded punch needle tool to "punch" the floss through the weavers cloth over and over to create a finished design.

If you haven't tried Punch Needle, I'd highly recommend it. Not only is it easy but it's a craft that is portable and can be taken with you anywhere. The great thing about Punch Needle is you can create a work of art of just about any design. Everything from primitive style designs, flowers to more cute designs. Your imagination is the only limit. There are also so many things you could put punch needle designs on.

Everything from framing them to creating handbags to just name a couple. Designs can range from very simplistic to very intricate. I would recommend if your a beginner to start with a simple design. Most Punch Needle designs are quite small. Ranging from three to four inches in size. Once you get going though you certainly could become more ambitious and create designs that are larger. Happy punching!

CRAFTING TIPS FROM TWO OLD CROWS
(From Debbie of http://www.2oldcrows.com/)

Painting Clay Pots

With Spring here and Summer just around the corner many of us are planting our gardens and adding flowers to our porches and patios. Decorating a plain terra cotta pot with a bit of artwork can add a pleasing effect. Clay pots are inexpensive and fun to paint. Preparing your pot before painting is the most important step to ensure that your creative artworks last. Here is how I prepare and paint the pots I use and have found be doing the following steps my pots have lasted many years and do not have paint peeling off

1.Always start with a clean dry pot. To clean your pot soak them in hot soapy water with a couple of tablespoons of bleach for about 15 minutes. Remove and rinse thoroughly. Allow the pot to dry completely remembering clay is very porous. Do not try to clean and paint the pot on the same day.

2. I do not paint the inside my pots. I only paint down a few inches from the top edge on the inside

3. Paint the outside of the pot with acrylic paint using 2- 3 coats and allowing it to dry completely between coats.

4. Pots can be painted with simple designs or even decoupage on. I sometimes like to decoupage seed packets on to my pots using modge podge and following the instructions on the jar. You can also stamp on pots. Just let your imagination decide how you would like to decorate your pot for your décor.

5. After you are finished painting and applying your design let the pot dry completely and then apply a water based polyurethane and allow to dry for a week before planting in them.

By following these few simple steps your pots wiil last for years and not bubble or peel. Have fun painting- this can be a great project to do with your kids !
