DECISIONS - DECISIONS

If you've been in business for awhile you probably understand the title of this column without reading much further. Sometimes life has a way of getting in the way of clear direction for business. Maybe you or a family member is dealing with a serious illness, maybe you have an underlying feeling that you are just plain tired of being a business owner, or perhaps the economic downturn is doing you in. Maybe it's something else that has made you take a new look at your business. Whatever it is, you might be faced with the decision to either reevaluate, close, sell, or take some time off from your business.

I recently had a number of things going on and it created an overwhelming pause in business.  I needed to decide what I should do vs. what I want to do. My husband was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma Cancer and went through months of grueling chemotherapy. He was in the hospital more than he was home and very, very ill. He lost almost 100 pounds during the ordeal but fortunately he made it through and has been cancer free for over a year. He did, however, suffer some side effects from the chemo that made us make major life decisions including building a smaller home without any stairs. And during the process I started eliminating many areas of my business because of lack of space and time.

So although you could be doing well with your business, you might want to keep it in the back of your mind what you would do if the unexpected happens. Maybe have at least one other person that knows how to operate the business. Or have everything written down in detail in case someone needs to step in to help out or possibly close everything for you. Although we never like to think of anything bad happening in our families, it never hurts to be prepared.

I hope that each of you do very well with your business. I hope you have years and years of success. But believe me, if the unexpected happens, you will be very happy that you set forth a plan of action. I didn't have anything planned and it was a total shock when it did happen. I wish for all of you to be more prepared than I was.

Until next month...
