Tips From The Blogging Queen
Column 9 - July 2007

*NOTE FROM DEBBIE: I'm happy to have Linda Walsh (certified "The Blogging Queen") offer a column here at Faithful Friends Online! Each month we will feature and archive on the website her columns regarding her blogging experiences. Thank-you so much Linda for your wonderful writings for Work At Home Businesses!

Are You Blogstipated?

Last month in my TFTBQ Column 8 our blog definition was
"Blogstipation."

"Blogstipation" is being unable to think of anything to blog about (i.e. writer's block for bloggers). So, my question this month is
"Are You Blogstipated?"

I think there is a fear amongst small business owners thinking about creating a blog and new small business bloggers. They are
both afraid that they will have to blog each and every day and aren't sure they would have anything to say. And, for the new bloggers sometimes when they try to write something for their blog they can't think of anything. They're "blogstipated!

So, is that bad? If you can't find anything to say every
day should that prevent you from creating a blog?

The answer to both is "Not at all!" When you've been blogging for awhile you begin to realize that you are going to have those "I just don't feel like blogging today!" days. And, THAT'S OKAY!You do not need to blog each and every day if you don't want to.

Blogs started out as "personal diaries" of a sort and some people, especially those keeping medical journals, etc. do blog each and every day. However, as a small business owner with a blog you don't need to blog each and every day. If you want to you can and if you don't want to - well, that's okay, too! If you only have
something to post about once a week that's FINE!

Keep in mind that as a small business owner you're blogging to personalize yourself and your business to your customers. To get your customers excited about you and your products.

If you have something to tell them post about it. If not - don't worry about it. It is far better to post every so often - especially when you write about something that your readers can tell is "exciting" to you than to post about something that clearly bores you.

The negative to not posting every day or even every week is that the search engines love blog posts as it is FRESH content. This means that if you post every day or even every week your blog is more likely to be picked up in a search engine than a blog with monthly posts.

So, how can you avoid "blogstipation?" Well, I can tell you what I do. I have been blogging for awhile and have posted hundreds upon hundreds of posts. The way I avoid "blogstipation" is to only write when I'm in a "blogging" mode. When I am I try to write several posts and hold them in the cue to be posted over several days. That way I'm giving the search engines FRESH content and I'm not putting pressure on myself to write something each and every day.

Do you have to write lengthy articles? Absolutely not. They can be as small as you want them to be. There is no set measure for this. It's whatever you think will interest your readers and potential customers.

And, if you really are "blogstipated" and can't come up with anything to say and you've been blogging for awhile then post a summary with clickable links to some of the articles you may have written a few months to a year ago.

Or, update an old article that your newer readers and customers might like and re-post it with a current date. In other words, if you're really "blogstipated" and can't come up with anything - don't reinvent the wheel. Use some of what you've posted before.

Or, if you have several blogs tell your readers and customers what's happening on those blogs that might interest them.

There are all sorts of things you can do. The most important is - if you're "blogstipated" don't worry about it. It will pass. You'll be in a "blogging" mode again in no time.

Homespun From The Heart

I'm very pleased to have Homespun from the Heart as the Business Spotlight this month. Thank-you so much Cindy!

Here are the Questions and Answers shared by Cindy:

1. Describe your business: type of business, where you're located, how long you have been in business, website URL's, etc. I  design and create primitive dolls, raggedys, seasonal primitives, patterns and kits. I work out of my home in rural PA. I sell my work mostly online at www.homespunfromtheheart.com  and also through 2 local shops on consignment. I recently joined forces with my friend Sue to create dolls with needlepunch accents - she does the needle punching and I do the dolls and we create patterns. We call ourselves Two Stitchin Fools, www.thepunchinfool.com/TwoStitchinFools.htm I've been sewing for many years, but officially opened my online doors a little over 3 years ago.

2. How did you decide on your business name? I spent so much time think on my business name - it had to have meaning because I wanted my customers to know that I hand-make my work and it comes from the heart. I came up with Homespun from the Heart one morning at about 4am and got out of bed to see if it was already 'spoken for' - it wasn't, so I jumped on it.

3. What were the first things you did to get your business going? I worked on building my mailing list with some small promotional things every month. I also joined a large online community and made sure I was active to get my name out there. I found some good online advertising sources too.

4. How long did it take you from the time you decided to open your business to your Grand Opening Day? Not very long! I'm the type of person once I make up my mind to do something, I just do it. I think it was only a couple of months. I was working full-time outside the home, so I was working on my website at night and on the weekends.

5. What was the best thing you did to get your business going?
Built my customer mailing list - between craft shows (I keep a sign up sheet there) and online mailing list, I have a lot of customers on my list. It's the best place to advertise and I do lots of fun promotional things with my customers to keep them coming back.

6. What was one thing that you did that you would advise others not to do?
I thought that as soon as my website was open for business, I'd be super-busy with sales. Wrong! I got really depressed about it too. I even thought about closing the site. Then I started reading articles and seeing what other folks did and tried some of my own promotions and stuff to get business going. I would definitely advise folks that once you are open for business, keep looking for ways to enhance your products/services and make sure you are not easily giving up.

7. How do you network? What do you find works the best? I am an member of a couple of communities online, although mostly active in one - Prim Mart. I go there to support other business members, to ask for advice, show my creations and even for some fun. I can show off new patterns right when they are released and it helps to boost sales. I also find that we share information that has helped each other out in various situations you come across when you own an online business.

Off-line, I network at craft shows with other vendors. I teach at our community college and meet new people all the time. I have a goal this year to join a professional crafting organization too. In my past careers, I have always that networking really helps me out so I put it up on my list of important to-dos.

8. Do you advertise? If so, what type of advertising works the best for your business? Yes, I believe advertising is so important - the internet is huge and you can easily get lost out there amount the many websites.  I like advertising in Country Sampler Magazine, I have done pretty well with them. There's also affordable co-op advertising available, I have done well with a couple of those. I also look for quality online advertising for banner rotations, marketplace listings, etc. I think being part of a network is also an invaluable way to advertise.

9. Do you have any advice to give someone thinking of getting into their own business? Write down your goals and dreams and revisit them often. Especially early on because you can get easily discouraged if it takes a few months for your first sale. Remind yourself why you are doing this and if you need to, find someone else in a similar situation you can talk to and get advice. Be open to change - I have refined my website so much in the last 3 years. I've also refined the products I offer and the way I take pictures, write descriptions, etc. Ask for suggestions and be open to them!

10. What type of products do you find are 'hot' right now? My dolls are selling quickly. My customers like to see different things, so I try to have new dolls for them as much as possible. I'm also selling kits and patterns pretty quickly too. I've seen some awesome Altered Art pieces that are really 'hot' sellers! I'll have to try my hand at that soon.

Thank-you Cindy for sharing your spotlight with us! I wish you much continued success!

5 Reasons You Should Offer Craft Classes

By Kelle Arvay - eCraft Classes

1. The Demand and Need. There are many reasons why you should offer craft classes. The main one would be because there need which you can fill and profit from at the same time. As the Internet continues to grow and more crafters seek resources, online craft classes become a natural learning option. Many crafters may find it more difficult to attend a live, in person type of class locally, so taking a class online in the comfort of their own home is a very appealing option.

2. Benefits the Visual Learner. There are many people in the world that are better visual learners. This means they learn easier by “seeing” than reading instructions alone. Those that struggle with instructions from a pattern alone will benefit greatly from being able to see the steps and read the instructions. This doesn’t mean you have to do away with creating written patterns, it just means you could reach a even wider audience by also offering online craft classes.

3. The Ease of Creating a Craft Class. If you are already a pattern designer it would really be beneficial for you to create a class at the same time. Creating a class is very easy and simply involves using your digital camera to take step by step photos as you create the item. Since you will be creating a finished item for the pattern anyway, it makes sense to take the small extra step to take photos as you go along.

The other thing you will need to do is type out corresponding instructions that go with each step photograph.

Finally, if you plan on offering a pattern template to go with the class, you’ll want to create the PDF for that. Or you can offer the full version of the pattern along with the class. Once your class is ready you would simply upload it to a craft class site.

4. An Ongoing Revenue Source. The work involved in creating an online craft class involves setting it up. Once you take step by step photos, typing out the step by step instructions and make a PDF template (optional), and upload it, your work is done. The class can now produce ongoing revenue for you from new customers purchasing it. If your classes cost $10 for example and over the course of 3 months you sell 60 classes. That is an extra $200 per month in revenue with no additional work involved on your part. Of course this example can vary tremendously based on the number of classes you have available and the actual number of classes you sell each month. It’s very possible to do much better than the example!

5. Additional Business Marketing. Offering craft classes can create a great stream of hidden marketing for your business. When people take your class and enjoy it, they are likely to tell other people about it, either directly or indirectly. Directly would be that they seek to tell others. Perhaps they may post about your terrific class on their blog or rave about it on their newsletter. Telling people about it indirectly would be if someone on a forum asked how to create something and they tell them about your class that just happens to teach how to create what that person is looking for.

Offering free classes from time to time is also a great way to gain some additional marketing for your business. Customers will enjoy the class and be more likely to share the free resource of your class with others. The additional traffic of customers taking your free class can result in those customers also purchasing one of your other classes.

CRAFTING TIPS FROM TWO OLD CROWS
(From Debbie of http://www.2oldcrows.com/)

Printing On Fabric

Printing on fabric is very easy if you follow a few simple steps. It will allow you to place words and images on muslin and other lightweight fabrics to use while crafting.

Supplies:

Muslin or light fabric ( should be a light color to see the print)

Scissors

Freezer paper

Printer( your printer must be a inkjet printer do not use a lazer printer it will melt the freezer paper and ruin your printer)

Directions:

  1. Choose you image and set it to the desired size using the photo editor you have on your computer.
  2. Choose your fabric- if you are wanting your fabric tea or coffee stained you must do this before you print on it
  3. Cut a piece of freeze paper and a piece of fabric to 8 ½ x 11inches- the same size as your printer paper
  4. Lay the freezer paper shiny side down on to the fabric and iron with a hot iron but no steam
  5. Trim off any stray threads so they wont get caught in your computer
  6. Place the fabric/freezer sheet you just made fabric side down into your computer and choose the image you have saved onto your computer. Now print using the cardstock setting.
  7. Peel off the freezer paper and heat set the image with a hot dry iron

There are tons of ways you can use the printed fabrics in altered art, doll’s, Ornies, tags and pillows. The possibilities are endless !
