A note from Debbie...

What a busy month I've had! Our new house was completed and we closed August 8th. The movers brought over the furniture on Monday the 11th and then the fun really began! After having all of our stuff in storage for almost 6 months it was an ordeal to say the least. But happily I can honestly say that we are so happy. Our new home is everything that we hoped it would be.

NOW FOR THE EXCITING PART!!! You will notice some changes to our newsletter format this month. We have added a Home Tour section, new freebies, recipe, and a day care section. I am so thrilled to have Denise on board as my assistant and she has already made an impact on the site.

Make sure to get your advertising in this month! We will be having a price increase beginning October 1st. It was going to take effect this month but with the move I haven't had time to make the changes. So you all have one more month to get your advertising in at the current pricing. And, to make it even more special for our newsletter subscribers we will be having a voucher code each month to use for additional discounts! This month we are offering a DOUBLE IT PROMOTION!!! That means that you need to put NEWSLETTER DOUBLE in the comments section and all banner ads will be DOUBLED to 2 years for the price of 1! Homepage ads will get 2 months for the price of 1! Newsletter ads will get 2 months for the price of 1! and so on... Please note that this offer is not valid with any other discounts or previous purchases. Expiration date is September 30, 2008.

Have a great September everyone!

Sincerely,
Debbie

Back to School

Well it’s that time again to send the kids back to school and have the house to ourselves! Now is time to start working on new items for our shops, be the online type or brick front.

Now is a great time to have all your Fall / Halloween items out and on display. I know some might feel it’s a bit early but it really isn’t. Make sure you have plenty of in stock products too. Because they will go fast! I know I started decorating the house for fall already.

Now is also a good time to get all your paper work and inventory in check. We all know how busy it gets after Halloween with Christmas sales and family. So while kids are busy with school and homework, take this time to get all your paper work together and file what needs to be filed. I like to have all mine ready by the end of September for my accountant. It might take a few days even a week or so but once you get use to doing it this time of year it will go smoothly for you.

Also another good thing to do this time of year is work on your plans for the spring and summer, have a detailed list ready to go so you can jump right into crafting as need be! I have a lot to get done myself.  That is all for this month, next month I will have tons of tips on storage and filing for you all. Have fun selling and creating this month and remember get all that paper work together!! Happy fall!

Until next month,
Denise - Faithful Friends Online Assistant

Why Daycare Regulations Are Good And Necessary

Daycare regulations are a vital and necessary element of the day care industry. Many of us already feel swamped by our daily tasks,
limitless red tape and view the rules as a threat and an inconvenience. Sinking in a sea of bureaucracy we tend to forget that this legislation serves a good end. Although our world in general appears to becoming more bureaucracy happy much of this legislation exists for a reason. It has been formulated specifically to protect those who are most at risk in our society.

Minimum standards of care are the bedrock of daycare regulations despite being seemingly stringent. Quality, early childcare that is constantly improving and evolving can mean so much more than the rulebook. My service benefits from my inspections and regulations because I use them as a yardstick, as a guideline for how my service could be improved.

I don't view them as a criticism of what I do but as a priceless workbook that inspires and aids me to further improve upon what I am
doing. Consider what many companies pay consultants to update their systems, procedures, quality control and effectiveness. We get it all
through our daycare regulations and inspections.

I keep a copy of the regulations for my region posted on the notice board in the entryway to my day care, one on my desk and one in the
staff room. Following my inspections the report becomes my bible, my ultimate focus until such time as I have addressed every issue raised
therein regardless of how minor. Then, I post the report (you guessed it), in the entryway, on my desk and in the staff room with an
˜Action" sticker beside each suggested improvement.

In my experience, the 'points' raised in the report tend to be helpful tips towards operating more effectively and safely on day to day issues rather than pointing out major violations. I take these tips seriously and rush to implement them because they are coming from a veritable font of daycare regulations knowledge "your inspections team have been there, done that and wear the tee shirt daily."

10 years of running a daycare leaves Fiona Lohrenz with a lot of knowledge to impart. This she does on her website plus on her 'Start a
Day Care Business' DVD guide: Home Daycare. You can find her at her Daycare focused website.

OUR BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT IS ON
Brown Bunny Patch

I'm very pleased to have Faithful Friends Online Assistant, Denise of Brown Bunny Patch, as the Business Spotlight this month. Thank-you so much Denise!

Here are the Questions and Answers shared by Denise:

1. Describe your business: type of business, where you're located, how long you have been in business, website URL's, etc.

We are a family owned business in the Pennsylvania coal region. We have been in business for 8 years now, everything is handmade by me, woodcrafts by my husband. We have a fine selection of handmade candles, tarts, woodcrafts, dolls, stitcheries, a new line of linens, and braided rugs. We sell country, primitive, and folk art items - perfect for any decor, so hop on in and check us out!

Candles & Crafts online business. Shamokin, Pennsylvania - 8 years in business! www.brownbunnypatch.com

2. How did you decide on your business name?

My name was simple, I love Bunnies and my last name is Brown! So the Brown Bunny Patch was born!

3. What were the first things you did to get your business going?

First thing I did was have family and friends try my candles, then my sisters would take them to work and sell them for me. I think this really helped start me out, because of so many people liking them, I decided to open a site and the rest is history!

4. How long did it take you from the time you decided to open your business to your Grand Opening Day?

It took me about 4 months, from thought to opening, and sometimes I wish I would have taken a little longer, took better pictures, etc. but all in all I was happy with my look and my opening.

5. What was the best thing you did to get your business going?

Best thing I did was put up flyers and take out ads! Promote, promote, promote!! The best things you can do, any type of banner site or top site is the best, even doing the ads in the local newspaper or putting up flyers is a great way to get your name out there.

6. What was one thing that you did that you would advise others not to do?

Rely on your site to bring in traffic on it's own, the web is too big to hope people will just pop on without advertising.

7. How do you network? What do you find works the best?

Exchanging links and attaching my site URL in emails works great!!

8. Do you advertise? If so, what type of advertising works the best for you business?

I think sites like this one that Debbie has is an awesome way to get your site seen. I do a lot of banner exchanges and top sites also, anything that gets people seeing your site is a positive.

9. Do you have any advice to give someone thinking of getting into their own business?

Make sure you really want a business, and then get all your paperwork down and done. Next set money aside to advertise and make supplies. Have a nice amount of product ready to go when you are ready to open.

10. What type of products do you find are 'hot' right now?

Candles are always a good thing, and now go with seasonal, never can go wrong that way. I have a lot of fall orders now, anything that has to do with fall or Halloween. Not the time to be selling Spring items, ya know, so as long as you make for the time of year, you will be fine.

Thank-you Denise for sharing your spotlight with us! I wish you much continued success!
